Overview
Portugal’s Costa Azul, or ‘Blue Coast’, lies north of the River
Tagus and boasts some of the very best beaches and best bathing
conditions in the whole of Portugal, which is a significant accolade.
Costa da Caparica is the region’s main holiday area, with 15 kilometres
of golden, sandy coastline that can be accessed via a miniature railway
in the summer months, and further down the coast is a range of quiet,
sheltered beaches that are a favourite destination of water sports
enthusiasts, at Lagoa de Albufeira, Sesimbra and Portinho da Arrabida,
with all the necessary equipment available for hire.
The
pretty, picturesque fishing village of Sesimbra, lies just 40 km south
of Lisbon and is well worth a visit and typical of this region, offers
great seafood.
This region includes
Arrabida Natural Park, 10,800 hectares bordered by Setubal, Sesimbra,
Palmela and the sea. The Park was formed in 1976 and in addition to
offering the most dramatic, breathtaking scenery, is home to a wide
range of flora and fauna, including some fabulous birds of prey. To the
south of this area is the Troia Peninsula, famous for its idyllic
beaches, with white sand stretching as far as the eye can see and of
historical interest, the area includes the remains of the Roman
fish-preserving town of Cetobriga. Continuing down the peninsula by car
you reach the Alentejan Coast, another region with fabulous beaches and
fine cuisine.
Portugal is a stunningly
beautiful country with a variety of subtly different landscapes, all
with their own distinct character and the Blue Coast is an opportunity
for those who want an alternative to the famous Algarve, plus the
chance to invest in a region that is still largely undiscovered in
terms of foreign buyers.
